DAMIANO SCARPA

Damiano Scarpa is an exceptionally talented cellist, known for his intense interpretive passion and deep expressive exploration, which lead him to perform a repertoire ranging from the great classics of chamber music to contemporary works by emerging composers. Each of his performances is an opportunity to create emotional connections with his audience, showcasing the versatility and expressive richness of the cello.

Studies 

Scarpa’s career has developed through rigorous study and prestigious academic achievements. He graduated with honors from the Conservatory of Castelfranco Veneto under the guidance of Maestro Pietro Serafin, specializing in chamber music with renowned Masters such as Filippo Faes and Domenico Nordio. He continued his training at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, where he studied with celebrated cellists Rohan de Saram and Antonio Meneses, earning a diploma with distinction. His quest for refinement led him to the prestigious Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona, where he studied with Maestro Rocco Filippini and furthered his art with Mario Brunello. He completed his studies at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, graduating “mit Auszeichnung” under the guidance of Professor Enrico Bronzi.

Professional Experience and Orchestral Collaborations

Scarpa’s orchestral career has unfolded within prominent international ensembles. From 2010 to 2012, he held the position of principal cellist (1. Stimmführer) with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, where he collaborated with conductors such as Dmitri Kitajenko, Giovanni Antonini, Trevor Pinnok, and Markus Stenz. He then performed with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks for the 2012-2013 season and served as principal cellist with the Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana from 2020 to 2024. His collaborations extend to esteemed orchestras like the Hessischen Rundfunk, the Orchestra of La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Filarmonico and Arena di Verona, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Teaching and Educational Activities

Dedicated to music education as well, Damiano Scarpa taught at the A. Scarlatti Conservatory of Music in Palermo from 2022 to 2024. He currently holds a permanent position as cello instructor at the A. Steffani Conservatory of Music in Castelfranco Veneto and conducts advanced courses at the Fondazione Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro, as well as international masterclasses at the Festival Internazionale di Musica.

Awards and Recognitions

Scarpa has received numerous awards in significant competitions. In 2006, he won the National Competition “Società Umanitaria” in Milan, with a jury chaired by Marcello Abbado. The following year, he achieved first prize at the “La Fabbrica delle Note” competition in Padua and at the National String Review in Vittorio Veneto. In 2008, he triumphed at the Città di Padova Award and the International Chamber Music Competition “Silvio Omizzolo,” where he received a special accolade for the best performance of Omizzolo’s Sonata.

Recordings and Recording Projects

Scarpa’s talent has been captured in various recordings. With Sarx Records, he recorded a CD following his success at the “Società Umanitaria” National Competition, and with Velut Luna, he recorded Silvio Omizzolo’s Concerto for cello, strings, and piano with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. In 2014, with Urania Records, he recorded in trio with Dario Zingales and Fausto Quintabà, performing works by Beethoven, Glinka, and Bruch.

Festivals and Concerts

Scarpa has been a prominent figure at important festivals, such as the Alghero International Festival, the Janigro Cello Festival, the International Festival of Portogruaro, and the “Dino Ciani” Festival in Cortina. Additionally, he has collaborated with celebrated conductors and soloists, including Riccardo Muti, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Martha Argerich, and Mischa Maisky, enriching the musical landscape with his artistry.

Jury Experience and Historic Cello

His expertise has also led him to serve on international juries, such as the International Cello Competition “Janigro” for Young Musicians in 2012. Scarpa plays a historic cello made in Naples by Vincenzo Postiglione in 1905, an instrument that shares the warmth and depth of the Italian tradition with his audiences.

Damiano Scarpa wurde 1985 in Castelfranco Veneto (Italien) geboren.
Er absolvierte sein Cello- und Kammermusikstudium mit Höchstpunktzahl und Auszeichnung am Konservatorium für Musik in Castelfranco Veneto bei Prof. Pietro Serafin, Prof. Filippo Faes und Prof. Domenico Nordio. Später schliesst mit auszeichnung sein Masterstudium an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg mit Prof. Enrico Bronzi ab.
Scarpa studierte u.A. bei Rocco Filippini (Accademia “Walter Stauffer” in Cremona) und Mario Brunello in Castelfranco, in der „Accademia Musicale Chigiana“ in Siena bei Rohan de Saram, Antonio Meneses und dem „Trio di Trieste“, von dem er das Ehrendiplom erhielt. Er nahm an Meisterkursen bei Franco Maggio Ormezowsky, Yvan Chiffoleau und A. Meunier teil.

Damiano Scarpa gewann zahlreiche erste Preise bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben wie z.B. „Societa Umanitaria“ Wettbewerb 2006, den „International Chambermusic Competition“ citta di Padova, die sechste Ausgabe des Wettbewerbes „La fabbrica delle note“, die „Rassegne Nazionali d Archi“ in Vittorio Veneto und “Concorso internazionale di Musica” in  Fusignano. 2008 gewann er beim International Chambermusic Competition „Silvio Omizzolo“ einen Special Award für die beste Interpretation der Cellosonate von S.Omizzolo mit dem Pianisten Pierluigi Piran. 2010 gewann er den dritten Preis beim „Enrico Mainardi Cellowettbewerb“ in Salzburg.

Damiano Scarpa spielte das Cellokonzert für Solocello, Streicher und Klavier von Silvio Omizzolo mit dem „Orchestra Padova del Veneto“ für „Velut Luna“ ein und nahm ebenfalls eine Solo-CD und eine CD mit Musik für vier Celli mit Mario Brunello für „Sarx Records“ auf. Im 2014 nahm Scarpa ein CD (Gassenhauer for 3) in trio mit Klarinette und Klavier auf, mit Musik von Beethoven Glinka und Bruch.
Damiano erhielt den 33. Rotary Club Prize Cittadella für junge Talente und wurde 2004 von Franco Maggio Ormezowsky eingeladen beim „International Summer Festival in Alghero“ ein Recital zu geben. Er spielte mit dem „Orchestra d’archi italiana“ unter der Leitung von Mario Brunello und musizierte mit Künstlern wie R. und G. Capucon, D. Rossi,M. Brunello, Maureen Jones, Sergei Krilov, Ivry Gitlis und Augustin Dumay.
 Seine Klavierpartner sind Pierluigi Piran und für diverse Projekte auch Irene Veneziano.

Damiano Scarpa spielte als Solist bei den renommiertesten italienischen Musik Festivals wie dem International Chambermusic Festival „Citta di Brescia“, dem International Summer Festival in Alghero „Festival Internazionale di Portoguraro“, und vielen anderen in Udine,Vicenza, Treviso, Trieste (SDC) Padova, Mantova, Livorno, Ravenna, Napoli, Modena, Siena und Milano. 2008 spielte Damiano bei „Dino Ciani International Festival“ neben Künstlern wie Martha Argerich und Christian Zimmermann und gab im selben Jahr ein Solo Recital beim Festival Internazionale di Musica „Valentiniano“ in Orvieto wo er im nächsten Jahr wieder ein Duo-Recital gegeben hat. Damiano Scarpa wurde in die Jury des „Antonio Janigro Cello Competition for young Cellists“ 2012 in Porec (Kroatien) eingeladen und nahm als Dozent und Solist am “Antonio Janigro Cello Festival” 2013 teil.

Von 2010 bis 2012 war Damiano 1. Stimmfuhrer im Mozarteumorchester Salzburg. In der Spielzeit 2012-13 wurde ihm ein Zeitvertrag beim Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks angeboten und erhielt er vom Orchestra del Gran Teatro la Fenice Venedig, Teatro Filarmonico e Arena di Verona, Teatro di San Carlo in Napoli, Hulencourt Soloists Chamber Orchestra und dem hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt Einladungen als Solocellist mitzuwirken.

Seit 2015 ist Damiano Scarpa Assistent von Enrico Bronzi’s Klasse bei der internationalen Masterclass in Portogruaro (VE) und seit dem Herbst 2016 leitet er eigene Klasse an der Fondazione Santa Cecillia in Portogruaro.

Damiano Scarpa spielt ein neapolitanisches Instrument aus dem Jahr 1905 von Vincenzo Postiglione.
